LG Delivers Much Needed Quality Control to the Realm of 144 Hz, 2560x1440, IPS-type Displays

I write this review as the former owner of 3 Asus PG279Qs and one PG279QZ. I was drawn to this realm of the monitor market because I do not believe that 4K displays are worth it at this particular point in time. As far as I see it, the majority are a compromise as the bandwidth requirements for running 4:4:4 chroma subsampling, an extended color gamut, a refresh rate of 144 Hz and beyond, and a resolution of 3840x2160 all at the same time will be much better served by DP 1.5 or HDMI 2.1 (proper HDR wouldn''t hurt either). Although it could be argued that achieving 144 frames at 1440p is more resource intensive than 60 frames at 2160p, I believe the experience to be the most immersive, at least until 144+ frames becomes viable at 4K. Unfortunately, based on the price to performance ratio trend of the current generation of graphics cards (Nvidia’s in specific), it is going to be a long, long time until that is achievable at a reasonable price. All things aside, I can state with confidence that I’ve found my sweet spot for monitors in the form of LG’s 27GL850. It has addressed all of the quality control concerns that I’ve experienced throughout my quest of trying to obtain a high refresh rate, 1440p IPS-type display. Seeing as this is an LG product, the monitor can rightfully be referred to as having an IPS (In-Plane Switching) panel as this is their proprietary term for the technology that produces the wider color gamut and viewing angles.

I did not buy this display because I am a hardcore gamer; I bought it because I wanted a quality monitor with good color reproduction, a uniform panel, and good response time. My purchase was based solely on the off chance of LG producing a monitor where quality control wasn’t an after-thought. Now that it has finally arrived, I am proud to report that this monitor delivers. The display has zero backlight bleed and excellent uniformity, contrast, and response time. White uniformity is even across the entirety of the screen while the factory calibrated colors appear accurate even next to my calibrated Dell. Outside of sRGB mode, the colors do come off as over-saturated, although some may prefer the added vibrancy of the Nano IPS technology (I did not). Black levels are on par with most other IPS-type displays that I’ve used despite the specified measurement coming in at a somewhat lower figure than similar displays. As for response time, it seems universally accepted by the monitor community that the fast setting is adequate in preventing overshoot. The faster and fastest settings produce undesirable artifacts known as coronas. Despite this monitor not having variable overdrive, I have had no perceivable issues when it comes to gaming as I do tend to binge on CS:GO from time to time.

If I had to nit-pick, and I do because this is a review where transparency informs prospective buyers, I will say that the strength of the presence of IPS glow on my display falls on the moderate end of the spectrum. This could be due to the fact the panel is 27 inches, which is a decent amount of real estate for this phenomenon to occur. It is also important to keep in mind that this is something that varies on a per panel basis. Without a doubt, it is a consequence of choosing to utilize an IPS panel for one’s computing purposes. Regardless, it is nothing unexpected or anything that cannot be addressed by adjusting the brightness level as well as the viewing distance, height, and angle. Besides simply turning down the brightness, placing the monitor further away is one way to remedy the matter. Another way to minimize the glow is to position the screen in such a way that one’s gaze meets the center of the screen as IPS-type displays fare better when the height of the top bezel is of equal height or greater in relation to one’s eyes. A final tip is to manipulate the screen’s tilt angle as oftentimes angling it upwards reduces glow.

By applying these adjustments, I can easily say that this is overall the best monitor that I’ve used to date. I will not sit here and bash Asus’ most recent iteration of their high refresh rate, 1440p IPS-type display, the PG279QZ, as one can refer to the top review of the PG279QZ to see what types of problems plague those monitors. What I will say is that it’s a breath of fresh air to see that quality control still exists in consumer-grade monitors. Realistically, no manufacturing process is going to produce near perfect monitors all of the time; however, this purchase has instilled confidence in me when it comes to the LG brand. I imagine that this model will provide all disillusioned monitor buyers a glimmer of hope when it comes to having a fighting chance at obtaining a quality monitor in this realm of the market.

***As per a request in the comments, I''ve attached pictures of the monitor at brightness of zero, 50%, and 100%. I also managed to track down another monitor from Micro Center, so I posted the same array of shots for this sample too. The results were very similar; however, a small circular area of bleed does exist in the top left corner. It is somewhat noticeable on a black screen unless I increase the height of the stand. To identify the pictures of the second monitor, please see the pictures without the headphones in them. Despite trying several approaches and platforms, the photo uploader refuses to retain the sequence in which I had originally ordered them).***

LG set my expectations high for this monitor from when they first debuted it at CES 2019, but they have only let me down after release. Even a couple months before release they were advertising this monitor as g-sync monitor, overclocking capabilities, and with sphere lighting. Then about the week of pre-order time they took down the LG info page on this monitor and released this with only g-sync compatible, no overclocking, and no sphere-lighting. They will deny all the things they promised, but you can find youtube videos on it.

The monitor I received had 1 dead pixel on the bottom left, everything else was fine. Brightness is enough for me, but like in Linus''s review it''s technically not bright enough to meet HDR certification. I''m upgrading from a 24in 144hz 1ms TN monitor, so my gaming experience has definitely been better with this one, but I''m not impressed. I''m subtracting one star for the dead pixel and two for not delivering on what they initially promised. I don''t care if it would have cost more for all the features I mentioned, LG advertised set the bar high on themselves. I know what I want and I''m willing to pay for it, so don''t use any cost cutting excuses.

Thanks for reading.

Edit: Got one that has minimal BLB compared to this one. Now I don''t struggle by looking at left corner of the monitor while watching movies or anything. IPS glow exists but BLB is minimal compared to the last one. Will update the picture later on. Colors are beautiful, response time is great, g-sync works out of the box flawlessly, gaming experience got much better with this monitor! Highly recommended (assuming you get a good model!)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cons: Seems I lost the "panel lottery" as I noticed the BLB when playing dark themed games or watching movies. Build quality is OK.

Pros: Pretty much everything else, it is a great monitor.

BLB was so bad I had to return it. Doesn''t feel good as I waited more than a month for this monitor to arrive. I''ll be waiting for amazon to restock and order again, will give better ratings then.

Update: After hearing back from LG today it appears to be a firmware issue so I''ve decided that I''m just going to return the monitor as defective (their other option is to ship it to them to have repaired which could take weeks). I''m extremely bummed as the monitor is really nice, but I just don''t have much faith in the monitor at this point and I''m not paying even more money for their service plan so it seems as if i''m better off getting something else. Hopefully if you do end up buying this monitor you have better luck than I did. I did include one picture that shows how the monitor''s input section screen was clearly glitched for reference.

I''ve had this monitor about 2 weeks and I can say that it is beautiful - when it is working. After about 2 weeks the monitor started not recognizing that my computer was connected to it and I have not been able to fix it. I tried both HDMI and DP, in all ports, and with 2 different computers and I cannot get it to work. The cords do work to our TV though. This is leading me to think there is some issue with the monitors internal software, but even a factory reset didn''t fix the problem. I''m going to continue messing with this and I''m reaching out to LG but until I hear back or can get this fixed i''m rating this 1 star.

Prior to this it would only do 1080@120hz and 1440@60hz. Not sure why it was so much work. And by work I mean days of research . I almost gave up and I questioned my hdmi cable.

What I liked:

+ Great response times: I don''t think anyone is going to miss their 144hz TN panel after using this.
+ Near perfect gamma 2.2 tracking on default gamma 2 mode
+ Average Delta-E around 1.5: not bad
+ Amazing color gradient handling when set to 10bit mode
+ No BLB or dead pixels

What I disliked:

- Default whitepoint is too cool (measured 7200K) and none of the provided modes gave an actual 6500K. Luckily, with a colorimeter in-hand (Colormunki Display) I was able to calibrate to 6500K with minimal loss of contrast by adjusting the RGB gains.

- IPS glow isn''t any better than my old IPS monitors. You''d think now that tablet and laptop IPS panels have mostly resolved this issue that monitor panels would do that too.

Other notes

- Contrast measured at 870:1, a bit low for an IPS panel although I cannot subjectively notice a difference in black levels compared to my other IPS monitor that measured 1150:1. If you''re looking for deeper blacks you''re better off with a 3000:1 VA.

- Gamma mode 2 is the only gamma mode that was calibrated at the factory. Changing the gamma mode to modes 1,3, or 4 resulted in a white point of 6300K, contrast ratio increased to 1060:1, however the gamma tracking is really bad on these modes.

- Gamma mode 1 results in an approx gamma of 2.0, mode 3 is approx gamma 2.5, mode 4 is approx gamma 2.3, but again the gamma curves on these modes are messed up and do not conform closely to these numbers so I ended up using gamma mode 2 and just correcting the white point.

While I think this is a beautiful monitor panel, with rich colors and great resolution, my problem with this monitor was that it''s not compatible with the highest settings of the Series X/S. I think that LG should update it''s firmware in these models. Let me explain. The highest settings you can run on Xbox are 120fps at 4k, yet there are only 2 reasonable, reputable screens you can buy out there as of February 2021 that allow 120fps at 4k with adaptive sync(because the Xbox uses AMD) via HDMI 2.1. Those are the 32 inch Samsung OLED TV and the Acer Predator X27, but most games aren''t fully synchronized for 4k/120fps yet and those 2 screens cost $1500 and $1300 dollars, respectfully. The market for 4k monitors at 120fps for HDMI 2.1/next gen consoles(not ones like the LG/Dell 4k monitors that only support it via displayport) is basically non-existent at the moment and will emerge over the next few years. Streamers/Youtubers have also tested games that claim to be 4k 120fps, and most fail to even get there. It will still be 3-4, maybe even 5 years before 4k 120fps gaming via HDMI 2.1 is truly commonplace and the price for 4k 120fps monitors drops. Therefore, most people buying the Xbox Series X/S(and I actually got one through Bestbuy) will be spending only around $500 dollars on a new monitor, like myself, to take full advantage of the 120fps at 1440p the Series X offers. The PS5 strangely doesn''t support 1440p, so this only applies to potential Series X buyers. I prioritize framerate over resolution for competitive gaming, and 1440p still looks amazing. Yet, when you run a game at 120fps, you run the risk of screen tearing, which is when the screen flickers or lags. This happens when the console''s/PC''s refresh rate is not in sync with the monitor''s refresh rate. To counter this, freesync was developed. It stabilizes and synchronizes the framerate from console to PC, eliminating screen tearing and allowing colors and the full graphics to load evenly. Freesync is known as adaptive sync for people who use AMD graphics cards and G-Sync for those using Nvidia graphics card. Some monitors might be both adaptive sync and G-sync compatible, if you see the green sticker in the corner of the monitor. Both the Xbox and PS5 use AMD cards and are programmed for adaptive sync. Yet, this monitor for some inexplicable reason, and the same goes for other LG monitors, only only support adaptive sync via HDMI 2.0(and this is important because the Xbox Series X/S don''t have Displayport and no DP to HDMI 2.0 adapters for Xbox exist) up to 100fps. This is not ok for the Series X/S, because if you run a game at 120FPS at 1440p without adaptive sync, you will get screen tearing and your resolution will not be fully loaded. You cannot run at a game at 100fps on Xbox Series X/S either, because it''s simply locked at 60hz or 120hz. Therefore, this monitor is basically the equivalent of a 1440p 60hz monitor with adaptive sync for the Series X/S because it does not support adaptive sync at 120fps/1440p for HDMI 2.0 since Displayport adapters for HDMI don''t exist for Xbox, and you will get screen tearing if you run the game at 120fps/1440p without adaptive sync. It does not make sense for LG to cap the adaptive sync HDMI 2.0 fps at 100, because the HP Omen 27i, Samsung G5, and the Dell S2721DGF both use the exact panel used for this LG monitor for their own 1440/144-165hz gaming monitors, yet those all support adaptive sync at 120fps for HDMI 2.0. Even more so, Acer, Asus, Viewsonic, Gigabyte, AOC, and Viotek all have 1440p 144-165hz monitors that support 120fps with adaptive sync for HDMI 2.0. To take this a step further, most of those companies I listed above, even the ones that use this exact LG panel, are moving on to making their own 4k 120fps monitors that support adaptive sync via HDMI 2.1. The fact that LG hasn''t even made this monitor and others similar LG monitors compatible at 1440p 120fps with adaptive sync for HDMI 2.0, while others already have and are moving onto 4k 120fps for HDMI 2.1, is shocking to say the least. LG might be the only company that doesn''t support 120fps with adaptive sync via HDMI 2.0 at 1440p. I truly wanted to love this monitor, but I couldn''t because it doesn''t support adaptive sync at 120fps. If you''re paying $500 for a gaming monitor, it should support 120fps at 1440p with adaptive sync. I had to sadly end up returning this monitor, and I bought a HP Omen 27i instead at Bestbuy. I absolutely love the Omen and it can actually support up to 144fps via HDMI 2.0 at 1440p and 165hz for displayport with adaptive sync for both, even though the Xbox can''t even go up to that fps, but my point still stands that LG capping adaptive sync support for 1440p at 100fps makes absolutely zero sense. Aside from myself, there''s no way I''m not the only Series X owner looking for the 1440p monitor that can run at 120fps with support for HDMI 2.0 with adaptive sync, so people realizing or learning that this monitor cannot do 120fps at 1440p via HDMI 2.0 with adaptive sync through word of mouth, Youtube, and Reddit threads will probably end up costing LG a few thousand potential customers and lots of money because they didn''t upgrade their firmware to make it fully compatible with the Series X/S. LG needs to fix this issue pronto. I don''t see why they didn''t make the monitor capable of 120fps with adaptive sync enabled for HDMI 2.0 in the first place, considering they likely knew that these were the supported specs coming out for the Series X/S almost 2 years in advance. It makes no logical or economic sense for them to do this, especially when other gaming monitors support it.

LG has outdone themselves with the 27GL850 monitor. Although I had my eye on this specific model for a while now, I expected the pricing in India to be atrocious. However, I managed to snag one for way lower than I had anticipated. Very well worth the money spent! Now, on to the monitor itself. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Pros: - Brilliant, vibrant colors. - Excellent Color Gamut (you''ll have to calibrate if you''re working with color-sensitive content creation) - Very wide viewing angles - Ultra-low response times (well, mostly. See cons for more details). Thanks to LG''s Nano IPS tech. Cons: - Advertised 1ms response time (''faster'' mode) is quite useless as the overshoot is horrible. You''ll be plagued by ghosting and inverse ghosting in fast-paced games. Bringing the response time down to ''fast'' fixes these issues and doesn''t result in too much of a response time penalty (drops to 4ms, which is still excellent for an IPS panel). - The blacks on this monitor are sub-par. There''s some bleed on the edges, and the blacks aren''t as deep as I''m used to (coming from a Samsung QDot VA panel that had lovely blacks). But this doesn''t mar the gaming experience one bit. If you''re coming from anything other than a quality VA panel, you won''t be disappointed. - HDR, sadly, is a gimmick on this panel. The HDR mode manages to look worse than the standard modes with some content, and it hasn''t even qualified the measly HDR400 certification. Leave this off, and stay away from this monitor if HDR factors into your purchase decision. However, at this price, I really can''t complain. Takeaways: Don''t use the marketed ''1ms'' response time mode. Set it to the ''Fast'' mode and still enjoy a very snappy experience in all your games. Please CALIBRATE your monitor. The factory calibration was quite terrible, and after a bit of tweaking, there was a significant improvement. All in all, a very close-to-perfect monitor at this price range. Would recommend wholeheartedly if you can live with the cons listed above (I can)

On paper, this monitor has it all (minus 4k obviously). 2k Res, 144 hz, IPS 1ms response, HDR, I mean you read the description obviously. In practice : + Amazing Picture quality, brightness and colors, it was an out-of-this-world upgrade for me compared to my ASUS VG248QZ + Responsive and high refresh rates + Easy to tweek settings, all options have a description which helps understand what it does and it displays at the top the main settings status like refresh rate, adaptative-sync, response time, HDR... + Sturdy Build ~ Adaptive-Sync, didn''t really see any difference from not having it on my ASUS VG248QZ so far. - HDR rendered the image bland, turned it off. It allows the HDR input but the end result is mediocre. Overall, I am happy with this monitor, I may upgrade my GPU (1660ti) so I can appreciate it even more! Not recommended if HDR is your main concern. I will provide an update to this review if anything significant changes.

Gorgeous picture quality while still retaining snappy response times. For a primarly MMORPG player, there is no better monitor in this price category. 1440p gives you a large overview of the scenery/battle area, while the IPS keeps that scenery looking gorgeous instead of washed out. Meanwhile the response times are still good enough for most FPS gamers, and the 144 HZ refresh rate is also good enough for most gamers as well (hugely noticeable difference from 60fps). My only caveat is, now that I''ve gone from 60-144 HZ, I''m thinking if I one day change monitor in future, I think 240 HZ might very well be worth it. However, I enjoy my picture quality too much to switch to an TN panel just yet. Regarding choosing a 1440p monitor over a 1080p monitor, keep in mind that older graphics cards may struggle to give high FPS on a beefy 1440p monitor. However, the latest generation models (2060-2080, or 1070-1080 NVIDIA cards) should have no problems running 100+ fps on most games in high or ultra high graphics for this monitor. The stand is quite nice to use. Super adjustable. Looks decent. Does what it needs to do lol. You''ve probably been asking yourself for days, TN or IPS panel? And probably you just can''t make up your mind. And after doing a lot of my own research, I finally crystalized my thinking on it, and perhaps what I concluded can help you too. Your choice will depend on the type of gaming you prefer. If you are a *primarily* FPS-gamer, I''d stay with mid to upper-range TN panels for now. Sure, the colors will be a little more washed out, but those super-low response times and input lag combined with 240HZ (or better) will be what you want. However, if you play a mix of FPS and adventure/mmorpg/other games, and/or you want to watch videos/pictures/etc and have them look amazing, this particular IPS panel is fantastic. The colors are undeniably better than TN panel with the performance coming startlingly close to that of a TN panel---perhaps close enough that only a professional FPS player might be able to tell the difference. And finally, if you don''t play FPS at all, then this monitor is also suitable, though perhaps even more than what you need. (As a non-gamer, you might consider VGA for the most true-to-life color representations, though the response times/input lag make them not really that suitable for gaming). Hope that helps. Do recommend this monitor, though not to those on a budget. But I consider it worth the money I spent. If you are on the fence, try shopping for it around Black Friday/Cyber Monday and see if you can snap up a deal! Picture shows new monitor in middle, 27''''. On right is an old, 18.1'''' alienware laptop screen for comparison. On left is meshify S2 computer case.
